FINDING A CAB

London's well-known black cabs are almost as much of an institution as its red buses. But they, too, are being modernized, and you may well see blue, green, red or even white cabs, with some carrying advertising.

Licensed cabs must carry a "For Hire" sign, which is lit up whenever they are free. You can ring for them, hail them on the streets or find them at ranks, especially near large stations and some major hotels. Raise your arm and wave purposefully. The cab will stop and you simply tell the driver your destination. If a cab stops, it must take you anywhere within a radius of 6 miles (9.6 km) as long as it is in the Metropolitan Police district, which includes most of the Greater London area and Heathrow Airport.

An alternative to black cabs are mini-cabs, saloon cars summoned by ringing a firm. It is not recommended to take a mini-cab in the street as they often operate illegally, without proper insurance, and can be dangerous. And it is recommended to negotiate your fare before setting off in case you do choose to take a mini-cab.

All licenced cabs have meters which display the fare as it increases, and surcharges for extra passengers, luggage or unsocial hours such as late at night. Fares are the same in all licensed cabs.

London's cabs are a safe way of travelling around the capital. They have two fold-down seats, can carry a maximum of five passengers and have ample luggage space.
