Сэм в испуге глядел на него снизу: хозяин в опасности, и никак ему не помочь - ну никак. Фродо закрыл глаза и попробовал устоять, одолеть... нет, невмоготу. Он потянул цепочку, нащупал Кольцо - и медленно надел его на указательный палец левой руки.

Все осталось, как было, в расплывчатой мгле; только черные тени вдруг надвинулись и прояснились. Перед ним возникли пять высоких воинов в серых плащах: двое стояли на гребне холма, трое приближались. Запавшие их глазницы светились острыми, беспощадными взглядами, на сединах -серебряные шлемы, в руках - стальные мечи. Они снова шаг­нули вперед, впиваясь в него ледяными глазами. Фродо в от­чаянии обнажил свой кинжал - и кинжал зарделся, словно раскаленная головня. Двое замерли. Третий был выше всех, шлем его венчала корона. В одной руке он держал длинный меч, в другой - кинжал: клинки отливали мертвенным све­том. Он ринулся к Фродо.

А Фродо, упав наземь, сам не зная почему, вдруг вскри­чал: «О Элберет! Гилтониэль!» - и ударил кинжалом в ногу подступившего врага. Яростный вопль всколыхнул темноту, и ледяное смертоносное жало вонзилось в плечо Фродо. Те­ряя сознание, он увидел, как из мглы вырвался Бродяжник с двумя факелами в руках. Последним усилием Фродо сорвал Кольцо с пальца и, обронив кинжал, упал навзничь.

do's sword or the phantom's knife or both? Is it correct to use the
word клинок for the Russian title if the word is attributed only to
Frodo's меч] What other word can be used as a Russian equiva­
lent to knife in this context?

• Are the words Колоброд or Бродяжник fitting the name
of Strider? How do they influence the impression of the image?
Think of other Russian equivalents for Strider of different stylis­
tic values.

• What other word but Упокоище would fit the text as an
equivalent for the Barrow! Try a few possible substitutes and see
how they change the tone of the text. In what way does Могиль­
ники differ from Упокоище — and both of them from Barrows?

• The colour words black and grey are very important for
the image of the phantoms and can be considered key-words. What
could make the translators vary the grey colour of hair into
пепельный? Why not серый, седой, сивый? What about the oth­
er colours of the palette of the story: white, red, silver?

• Comment upon the words that were omitted by transla­
tors. Which of them were less important and can be dropped with­
out a loss? Which words you'd rather save in translation?

• Analyse the translation of stylistic devices, e. g. comment
upon the transformation of the simile he felt a pain like a dart of
poisoned ice pierce his left shoulder into его левое плечо пронзила
ледяная боль. Is the impression of the image the same? Which of
them is more expressive? Is the word dart important by itself to
be saved in translation in the line with knife and sword?

• Which of sentence structures need transformation in this text?

• Look for other translations of the text and comment upon
the difference.
