Reflexive pronouns
Возвратные местоимения
Возвратные местоимения образуются от личных и притяжательных местоимений прибавлением -self в единственном числе и -selves во множественном числе.
Возвратные местоимения: myself (себя, я сам), yourself(себя, ты сам), himself (себя, он сам), herself(себя, она сама), itself (себя, оно само), ourselves (себя, мы сами), yourselves(себя, вы сами), themselves (себя, они сами).
Возвратные местоимения употребляются в предложении для того, чтобы сказать, что предмет, названный подлежащим предложения, сам совершает действие или испытывает его на себе.
I will tell him everything myself. Я сам все ему расскажу.
She sold all the tickets herself. Она продала все билеты сама.
Don’t cut yourselves! Не порежьтесь!
He defended himself bravely. Он храбро защищался.
She spoke very little of herself. Она очень мало говорила о себе.
Мы не используем возвратное местоимение после таких глаголов как: to feel (чувствовать себя), to behave (вести себя), to relax (расслабиться), to concentrate(сосредоточиться).
Следует запомнить следующее выражение, которое переводится как «один», «сам по себе»:
Very young children shouldn’t go swimming by themselves.
Маленьким детям не следует купаться одним.
Do you prefer working by yourself?
Ты предпочитаешь работать одна?
Exercise 8. Read and translate the sentences paying attention to the use of reflexive pronouns.
1. They have only themselves to blame. 2. The mayor himself cut the ribbon to open the new city hospital. 3. That woman has put herself in a difficult position. 4. The governor himself will speak at the university. 5. One can easily injure oneself while skiing. 6. A baby can’t take care of itself. 7. You may burn yourself with matches.
8. After a busy day he likes to be by himself. 9. Don’t make a noise, please. I’m trying to concentrate. 10. I had a good, proper look at myself in the mirror tonight. 11. — It's hot, Mommy. Can I take my T-shirt off? — I don't think you should, darling. I don't want you to expose yourself to the sun. 12. The tools themselves are much smaller than the mechanisms that direct them. 13. I’m sorry about the party.
I behaved like a child. 14. We felt insulted by their offer. 14. Bach dedicated himself to music.

Exercise 10. Translate the sentences from Russian into English.
1. По утрам я готовлю себе чашку кофе и бутерброд. 2. Сам решай свои проблемы. 3. Я сама об этом позабочусь. 4. Он увидел это сам. 5. Они живут одни. 6. Мама чувствует себя прекрасно сегодня. 7.
