Appointment of Dr. Sophie Quinn-Judge
Associate Director
Center for Vietnamese Philosophy, Culture, and Society
The Center is very pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Sophie Quinn-Judge as its Associate Director. Dr. Quinn-Judge is a highly accomplished scholar of Vietnamese history and culture. Dr. Quinn-Judge has received international recognition for her scholarly work on Vietnam, including her highly-regarded book, Ho Chi Minh: The Missing Years (1919-1941), and essays on such topics as the history of women in 20th-century Vietnamese politics. Dr. Quinn-Judge, who is fluent in Vietnamese, spent two years in Vietnam working with a medical voluntary agency and she has made numerous subsequent visits to Vietnam. She has also served as a correspondent on Soviet- Asian affairs for the Far Eastern Economic Review and has contributed to other publications such as the Guardian (London). Dr. Quinn-Judge received her Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and she was Research Coordinator of the Cold War Studies Programme in the International History Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Dr. Lauren Meeker
In 2007 Dr. Lauren Meeker became a Research Fellow of the Center for Vietnamese Philosophy, Culture and Society. She received her Ph.D. in 2007 from Columbia University for her dissertation on quan ho singing: Mediating the Folk: television and the representation of traditional culture in Vietnam. She was an ACLS International Dissertation Field Research Fellow, as well as a Fulbright-Hays Fellow in Vietnam.
She is collaborating with Temple’s Vietnam Center on a long-term project to film traditional folk festivals in Vietnam.
Appointment of Dr. Ngo Thanh Nhan as Visiting Research Scholar at Temple University
Dr. Ngo Thanh Nhan as Visiting Research Scholar, from September 1, 2006. Dr Nhan will be working on projects connected to the digitizing of Nom documents, in particular the collection of Han Nom documents held by the Institute of Social Science Information in Hanoi.
Dr. Nhan is a computational linguist who specializes in computer character encoding.
He was associated with Vietnam’s efforts to standardize codes for Quoc Ngu, its romanized script; since 1992 he has been working on the ideographic-based Nom script, the first system for writing the Vietnamese language. Go to Ngo Thanh Nhan’s web page

Bristol-Mekong Project (Incorporating the Bristol-Vietnam Project)
Welcome!
Offering path-breaking research on contemporary Vietnam and its neighbours, the Bristol-Mekong Project stands at the interface between academia, business and policy-makers. Its aim is to provide a focal point for research on Vietnam and the Greater Mekong Sub-region, attracting leading international scholars, practitioners and postgraduate students from Vietnam and around the world.
Our mission statement is:
To produce research of the highest quality on Vietnam and the surrounding states
To make that research available to business and policymakers through the provision of consultancy services, briefings and reports
To promote postgraduate education and research training for a new generation of scholars from the Greater Mekong sub-region.
Affiliated to the Governance Research Centre in the Department of Politics at the University of Bristol, the Bristol-Vietnam Project is directed by Dr Martin Gainsborough, Lecturer in Development Politics and Research Associate of Bristol’s Centre for East Asian Studies.
Key personnel:
Dr Martin Gainsborough is the founder and director of the Bristol-Vietnam Project. A specialist in political economy and governance, he is currently a lecturer in the Politics of Development at the University of Bristol, UK. Dr Gainsborough has over fifteen years of research and consultancy experience in Vietnam. He has lived and worked in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is the author of numerous books and articles on Vietnam’s politics and political economy. Prior to his academic career, Dr Gainsborough was the Asia-Pacific Editor at Oxford Analytica and a long-term author for the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Mr Scott Cheshier is Deputy Director of the Bristol-Vietnam Project (with special responsibility for donor projects). He has worked on fiscal decentralisation, international integration and industrial upgrading in Vietnam, and is a specialist in state owned enterprise reform with particular focus on state corporations. His most recent work includes contributing to the Transparency International National Integrity System report on Vietnam. From 2005, Mr Cheshier has worked as a Specialist in Economics for the United Nations Development Program in Vietnam. Mr Cheshier has an MSc in Political Economy of Development from SOAS, University of London, and currently lives in Hanoi.
Mr Jago Penrose is Deputy Director of the Bristol-Vietnam Project (with special responsibility for private sector projects). He is a specialist in the growth of the firm in transitional economies and is currently looking at the role of business groups in Vietnam. His recent work includes comparative analysis of Vietnam’s competitiveness policy and the effects of SOE reform on Vietnamese firms. Since 2004 Mr Penrose has worked as an Economist for the United Nations Development Program in Vietnam. Mr Penrose has an MSc in Economics from SOAS, University of London, and currently lives in Hanoi.
