The Institute I Study At

I’m a first-year student1, and I meet a great number of students who, like me, come here to acquire knowledge and to storm the summits of science.

The Smolensk Institute of Economics (a branch of the St. Petersburg Academy of Management and Economics, AME) I go to, is one of the biggest educational institutions in Russia, training specialists in various spheres. Many students study here. The Institute is rather young.

The faculty in our Institute prepares specialists in economy. I study at the city management (finance and credit, accounting, anti-crisis management, tourism and hotel service) department. I ’m good at this subject and hope to be a good specialist.

The Academic year starts in September and has two terms. During a term we listen to lectures, have seminars, classes and consultations in different subjects. If we don’t understand something, we may go to the consultations too.

We have two sessions a year, in January and June. But I may take my exams in any subject all year round.2 I may graduate from the Institute as fast as I can.

There is a large library at the disposal of students, which provides them with textbooks, instructions and literature on special subjects.

 

Time passes quickly, and very soon I’ll graduate from the Institute and become a real professional in my line.

Lucky are the people who have friends. I’m happy to have many friends too. Some of them are very close, some are less. But all of them make my life interesting and enjoyable.

I appreciate friendship. It’s a special thing. It makes happiness glow brighter and grief less painful, because we have friends to share it. When we doubt our ability to fulfill our aspirations or to reach our secret goal it is our best friend who gives us a spark of assurance. And we trust our friend and are grateful. Friendship is a bridge between loneliness and fellowship, frustration and confidence, despair and hope, setbacks and success. That’s why a true friend is a priceless gift. They are rich who have true friends, says a proverb and I agree.

I think, Natasha is my best friend. We have much in common: the same interests and attitude to life. Very often our opinions coincide, sometimes they differ. But we never quarrel, there’s a mutual understanding between us.

I like her appearance. She is a tall blonde with blue eyes. She’s not a beauty, but rather attractive. She has a sense of humour and often makes me laugh.

She lives far from my house. But we meet every day at the Institute. We are the same age. We spend a lot of time together discussing books, films, and performances, solving our problems, planning our future. We can talk about everything. I appreciate my friend’s advice.

I know, that the way to have a friend is to be one, so my friend can rely on me. I won’t let her down.

My friend

I’d like to tell you about my best friend Olga. She is my classmate and lives next door to me. Olga is а pretty girl. She is thin, slender and stylish. She has got lovely dark hair, blue eyes with long lashes and а straight nose. Her skin is fine. She usually wears sweaters with knee-length skirts or trousers.

Olga is an active and energetic person. She can’t bear just sitting around doing nothing. It makes her impatient and restless. She knows what she wants, and I think she is sure to achieve her goal.

Olga is hardworking, organized and does well at school. She is а kind of person who always knows how to have a good time. Olga has а good sense of humour and never looks moody. She enjoys being the centre of attention while I am always nervous in public.

I can’t say I’m passive, but still I’m different. My problem can be summarized in the words: lack of confidence. I’m shy with other people who may think I’m boring and stupid sometimes. Lack of confidence also makes me indecisive: I spend days trying to make up my mind what to do about quite simple things. Unlike my friend I’m disorganized and sometimes absent-minded. I’m hardworking too especially when I’m doing something I’m interested in. But if you compare Olga and me, my friend is more mature for her age physically, emotionally, intellectually.

We both like reading fiction, exploring the city, its streets, churches and museums. We spend much time together, help each other to do our homework, go to the cinema, walk in the park, exchange books.

I respect my friend for her strong will, cheerful and kind character, her intellect and modesty. She is always full of ideas and knows what and how to do. It’s very pleasant to be with her around.

Appearance and Manners

 

When we speak about somebody's figure, face, hands, feet we mean his or her appearance. A person may be tall, middle-sized or short, thin or plump. A face may be round, oval or square. In summer some people may have freckles on their faces. Old people have wrinkled faces.

People's hair may be long or short, thin or thick, good or bad, straight or curly. If it is long it is often plaited.

Its colour may be black or fair, chestnut or red. Old people have grey hair.

Eyes may be large or small. They may be of different colour, grey, green, black, or hazel (brown).

Cheeks may be rosy or pale (if a person is ill), plump or hollow (if a person is very ill). Some people have dimples in their cheeks when they smile.

Women usually have their hair done at the hairdresser's.

The manner of walking is called the walk (gait). One’s step may be: light, heavy, firm. Old people often shuffle their feet, have a shuffling gait.
