Зі своєї практики перекладачі знають, що з двох “паралельних” текстів українською і англійською мовою більшим за обсягом, як правило, є український текст. Однією з причин цього є тенденція англійського мовлення до стислості, лаконічності та компресії мовних засобів. Таке твердження не слід розуміти як правильне стосовно всіх ситуацій. Слід пам’ятати, що у певних випадках українська фраза або висловлювання може бути коротшою, а в інших – стислішою може бути англійська фраза або висловлювання.
Під компресією розуміється будь-яке скорочення кількості елементів речення або вилучення елементів речення при перекладі. Причини компресії при перекладі достатньо різноманітні: це можуть бути особливості граматичної будови мови перекладу, стилістичні та прагматичні чинники.
