AT THE DOCTOR’S.

When we have a headache , a stomach-ache , a sore throat, a cold, or a pain in some other part of the body, we call the doctor. He takes our temperature and feels our pulse. He examines our heart, our lungs, our stomach or pressure, the part of the body which hurts us, and tells us what the matter is with us. He says: “You have a slight temperature”, “You have a flu”, or “You have caught a cold”, or “You have heart disease”.

He doctor gives us a prescription and says: “I shall prescribe some medicines. You must take the prescription to the chemist’s and he will make up the medicine for you. Take the medicine twice a day before meals.”

If we follow the doctor’s instructions, we get better; if we disobey the doctor we may get worse, and even die. We must follow the doctor’s instructions, if we want to get better. If we have a temperature, we must stay in bed and take the medicine he prescribes. If we cannot get better at home we must go to hospital.

If we need an operation, for example, if we have appendicitis, a surgeon performs the operation on us. If we are too ill we go to hospital in the ambulance. After our illness we can go to a sanatorium until we are strong again.

When we have toothache, we go to the dentist’s. The dentist examines our teeth and asks: “Which tooth hurts you?” He says: “That tooth has a cavity. I must stop it, I must put in a filling “.If the tooth is too bad, the dentist extracts it.

GENERAL DENTAL PRACTICE

General dental practice includes mouth examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The dentist frequently uses X-rays and other equipment to ensure correct diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment may include filling cavities, removing the nerves of teeth, treating diseases of the gums, removing teeth, and replacing the nerves of teeth with bridges and dentures. Anesthesia is often used in any treatment that might cause pain. Teeth may be filled with amalgam or cement.

Perhaps one of the most important parts of a dentist’s work is preventive dentistry. If a dentist examines patient’s teeth at regular intervals, he may find and treat a disease before it becomes serious.

THE HEALTH SERVICE

The level of medical service both in Britain and the USA is very high. Every employed citizen is obliged to pay weekly a certain amount of money to the national health service. The sum necessary to run medical services is very big and a large part of it comes not from weekly form payment but from taxes. Various forms of Medical Insurance are widespread in these countries.

Everything is paid. For example, in the USA if you turn a city hospital, you should pay at least $ 50. Separately you will pay for a consultation, minimum $50-60 for a visit. A medicine will cost you another minimum $15-20. You should take a prescription for purchase of many drugs in American drugstores.

However you can take medical service free of charge in medical institutions attached to different charity and religious organizations. Thus, the National Health Service (NHS), UK, provides free medical treatment for visitors from EU and Commonwealth countries and to visitors from other countries with reciprocal health arrangements. An NHS prescription costs 5.25 pounds at present.

MEDICAL CARE

People go to the doctor when they are sick or it s time for a check up. Make an appointment in advance. Appointments with a doctor are usually made by telephone. When you get to the doctor’s office, tell the nurse you name, than sit in the waiting room to see the doctor. If it is the first time you are visiting the doctor, the nurse will ask you to fill out an information form. This form will give the doctor background information and tell how to pay your bill – through an insurance company, for example. Unless previously arranged, doctor bills should be paid immediately after treatment.

The doctor might give you medicine or prescription to be filled. In the last case you go to the drugstore, give the prescription to the pharmacist who will fill it and give you the medicine. You can get medical help (care) from private doctors, clinics, or hospitals. You may be given medical help without payment if you quality to be treated at a free clinic.

Going to the dentist for a check up must be regular thing. Most people do it once a year. At that time, you also have your teeth cleaned by the dentist to prevent problems. In addition to annual check ups you may have to go to the dentist in an emergency. A broken tooth, a bad toothache or some other problem may require immediate help.

It is good for travellers to have a wallet size Medical Passport, which contains all facts concerning one’s health: emergency information, laboratory findings, X-ray reports, allergies, sensitivities to drugs, lens prescription, blood types, electrocardiograms.
