Exercise 1. State the form and the function of the infinitive. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. I have done all I could to help him. 2. To invite friends and to go with them for a walk was his favourite entertainment. 3. To meet the demands for goods, new shops have been opened in the town. 4. It all sounds too good to be true. 5. Surely it is not at all necessary to go into details. 6. I’m sorry to have taken so much of your time. 7. This is a good place to rest. 8. He looked at the shelves of books to be read. 9. She was the last to realize how dangerous it was. 10. Even to think of it gave him torture. 11. The best thing she could was to get out of here. 12. The plan will be discussed at the meeting to be held on May 25. 13. Exercise 2. Change the sentences according to the examples.

I. Example: He was the first person who came to the party. –

He was the first to come to the party.

1. The manager was the last who left the shop. 2. He is the only one who gave up smoking. 3. I was the next who spoke on the topic. 4. He was the first man who swam the Channel. 5. His horse came in the race the last. 6. This is an interesting fact that should be mentioned in the report. 7. He is the person whom we can trust.

II. Example: They sent me to University, they wanted me to study law. -

They sent me to University to study law.

1. He opened the door. He intended to go out. 2. He rushed into the burning house. He wanted to save the child. 3. He opened his mouth. He was going to say something but then changed his mind. 4. I’m saving up. I hope to buy a car. 5. He ran the bell. He wanted to tell us that the dinner is ready.

III. Example: He is clever. He can answer the question. –

He is clever enough to answer the question.

1. It isn’t very hot. We can’t lie in the sun. 2. The coffee isn’t strong. It won’t keep us awake. 3. You are quite thin. You can wear this dress. 4. He was very curious. He opened the letter. 5. He is rich. He can afford this car.

IV. Example: He is busy. He can’t see anyone. –

He is too busy to see anyone.

1. He was nervous. He couldn’t speak. 2. I was terrified. I couldn’t move. 3. It was rather cloudy. We couldn’t see the eclipse properly. 4. It is very cold. We can’t have a swim. 5. He was very snobbish. He wouldn’t talk to any of us.

Exercise 3. Use the correct form of the infinitive in brackets.

1. I'm happy (hear) of Tom's success. 2. He's pleased (be) in London again. 3. I'm delighted (meet) your sister. 4. She is so lucky (have) such a good family, (see) all love and care since childhood. 5. He expected (help) by his friends. 6. I am sorry (break) your pen. 7. The idea was too complicated (express) in one paragraph. 8. How fortunate he is (travel) all over the world and (see) so much of it. 9. I hate (bother) you, but students are still waiting (give) books for their work. 10. When we came he pretended (sleep). 11. Exercise 4. Translate the sentences from Russian into English using the infinitive:

1. Не предупредить его об этом было бы нечестно. 2. Она была слишком мала, чтобы запомнить происшествие. 3. Инженер хотел, чтобы ему показали весь завод. 4. Это интересный фильм, который можно посмотреть. 5. Кто первым поднял этот вопрос? 6. Наш план заключался в том, чтобы закончить работы к началу мая. 7. Он был счастлив, что его повысили в должности. 8. Она всегда найдет, над чем посмеяться. 9. Я встал в 6, чтобы не опоздать на утренний поезд. 10. Ему было нечего сказать. 11.
