Exercise 1. Read, translate and comment on the form and meaning of the modal verb

“can”.

 

1. On a clear day, you can see the shores of Haiti and Cuba from the summit of Blue Mountain Peak. 2. I know you can do it because you have the courage. 3. Bungalows are for old people who can’t manage the stairs. 4. She gave Mary the names of several friends, whom she could trust. 5. We wish we could rely on him! 6. One cannot love and be wise. 7. Angela could speak French when she was six, she can do it now and she will be able to speak it perfectly in some years. 8. Could I have a look at the papers? 9. You could speak good English if you tried. 10. It wasn’t easy but they were able to win the match. 11. He won’t be able to sell his car unless he reduces the price. 12. Can she be lying? 13. Exercise 2. Complete the sentences using “can/can’t” or ”could /couldn’t”.

Exercise 3. Fill in the blanks with “сап/can't” or “be (not) able to” in the proper

Exercise 4. Open the brackets with “could” (expressing a possibility) or “could have” (expressing a possibility that did not happen) and make all necessary changes.

 

1. A car is pulling up. It could (be) Lucy. 2. He could (get) a credit, but he did not prepare all the documents in time. 3. Why didn't you ask me? I could (do) it for you. 4. Exercise 5. Express your surprise and disbelief using ”can/could”

A)in interrogative sentences.

Example: He is working now. Can/Could he be working now?

 

l. He was at the party yesterday. 2. They are in Germany. 3. He has broken his leg.

4. They were sent to prison. 5. She got married. 6. He studies at Cambridge University. 7. She has been practicing the violin for five years. 8. He has made an interesting report. 9. Exercise 6. Translate into English.

1. He может быть, чтобы он был дома вчера в это время. 2. Неужели Ник сказал вам об этом? 3. Возмож­но, он и заходил к ним, когда был в Москве. 4. Мой брат мог бы сделать это, но не захотел. 5. Вряд ли они поженятся; они слишком разные люди. 15. Разве мог кто-нибудь поду­мать, что он выиграет матч? 16. Ну что я могу сказать? Правилам нужно подчиняться.

 

 

3. Модальный глагол “may”

1. Глагол “may”имеет следующие формы:

may– настоящее время (могу, может и т.д.)

might– прошедшее время (мог, могли); сослагательное наклонение (мог бы,

могли бы).

It’s very cold here. May I shut the window?

Здесь очень холодно. Можно закрыть окно?

We may (might) go to Italy.

Возможно (может быть), мы поедем в Италию.

If you tried, you might get this book.

Если бы вы постарались, вы могли бы достать эту книгу.

2. Глагол “may”может выражать:

а) разрешение, позволение совершить какое-либо действие:

You may take my umbrella. Ты можешь взять мой зонтик.

May I wait here? Можно мне здесь подождать?

б) предположение, основанное на неуверенности:

It may start raining. Вероятно, пойдет дождь.

He may not be at home. Возможно, его нет дома.

3. Для выражения разрешения “may” употребляется только в настоящем времени. В прошедшем времени для выражения разрешения в прямой речи употребляется не глагол “might”, а глагол “to allow” (разрешать) в страдательном залоге. Глагол “to be allowed to” является эквивалентом модального глагола “may”.

He was allowed to go there. Ему разрешили пойти туда.

He will be allowed to go there. Ему разрешат пойти туда.

4. После “may” употребляется Continuous Infinitive, когда высказывается

предположение, что действие совершается в момент речи:

Where is she? – She may be walking in the park.

Где она? – Она, может быть (возможно), гуляет в парке.

5. Сочетание “may” с Perfect Infinitive выражает предположение, относящееся к прошедшему, и переводится на русский язык как «мог, могли»:

He may have lost your address.

Он мог потерять ваш адрес. (Он, возможно, потерял ваш адрес.)

They may not have come yet.

Они могли еще не приехать. (Они, возможно, еще не приехали.)

 

Сочетание “might” с Perfect Infinitive может выражать упрек или неодобрение

(мог бы, могли бы и т.п.):

You might have told him about it.

Ты мог бы сказать ему об этом.

6. Для выражения значения, противоположного глаголу “may”, т.е. для выражения запрещения, наряду с “may not (mayn’t)” (нельзя)употребляется

“must not (mustn’t)”:

You may not smoke here.

Здесь нельзя курить.

You must not smoke here.

7. “May” в сочетании с Indefinite Infinitive употребляется в придаточных предложениях цели. Сочетание “may” с инфинитивом переводится на русский язык сослагательным наклонением. “May” в этом случае в значительной степени теряет свое лексическое значение, сохраняя лишь некоторый оттенок возможности:

I’ll give him my exercises so that he may correct them.

Я дам ему свои упражнения, чтобы он их исправил.
