Omsk Water Transport Institute is the higher educational institution¹ that trains specialists for River and Sea Fleet. It was founded in 1956 and named the Novosibirsk Water Transport Engineering Institute Study Consultant Point before 1989. In 1989 it was named the Novosibirsk Water Transport Engineering Institute Omsk Branch, which was united with the Omsk Command River College in 2006 and was named the Novosibirsk State Water Transport Academy Irtysh Branch² (in Omsk). There are two structural units within our Institute: the Higher Professional Education (HPE) and the Secondary Professional Education (SPE).

The Institute trains students in 4 specialities at full-time department³ and in 6 specialities at correspondence department⁴. The names of specialities are: the Ship Exploitation and Power Engineering Plants, the Ship Electric Equipment and Automation Means Exploitation, the Electric Drive and Automatic Industrial Plants and Technological Complexes, the Economy and Enterprise Management (Transport), the Transport Organization and the Operation Management, the Hydrotechnical Construction.

Our Institute is situated in the center of the city and occupies three buildings. It has a hostel for the students. The students study many subjects at the Institute, such as higher mathematics, physics, drawing, computer technology, foreign language, philosophy, history of Russia, etc.

The academic year consists of two terms. The typical forms of instructions at the Institute are lectures, seminars, laboratory works and term papers⁵. At the end of each term the students take exams and receive credits. The grades (Excellent – 5, good – 4, satisfactory – 3) are written in student’s book “zachyotka”. It is the student’s personal book for all the exams and credits. The budget-students⁶ who pass all the exams well get a grant. The students have practical training in ports, shipping companies and at shiprepair plant. The course of training lasts from 4,5 up to 6 years. The graduates of the Institute are awarded a Diploma of Engineering.
