The Chuvash Republic is a subject of the Russian Federation. It is situated in the middle of the European part of Russia.

Our national flag and coat-of-arms depict the Eternal Tree and three stars elements of Chuvash embroidery.

The head of the Republic is President. According to the former legislation, the first Chuvash President, Nikolaj Fyodorov, was democraticallyelected by the citizensof the republic and inaugurated in January, 1994. He still governs the republic and is supported both by the population of the republic and central government. He is the main executive person in the republic; he forms the strategic directions in the internalpolicy. According to the new Russian legislation, the next President of Chuvashia will be appointed by President of the Russian Federation.

The Government of Chuvashia consists of Ministers; it is led by the Head of the Government and is subordinated to President. The Ministers and the Head of the Government are appointed by President and approved by the Chuvash Parliament.

The legislative body, the Chuvash Parliament, is called the State Board of the Chuvash Republic. There are 44 members in the Parliament. Each of them represents an area in the Chuvash Republic. The members of the State Board belong to different parties and movements. They are democratically elected at the election, which takes place every 5 years.

The capital of Chuvashia is Cheboksary. The town is located on the right high bank of the Volga river between Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan. The Chuvash Republic has 21 administrative districts, 9 towns, 1727 settlements. The city and district administrations (local government) are headed by their Glavas (Heads). They are largely free in making decisions on local affairs. The city and district administrations are responsible for planning and housing on the local level.

There are many democratic parties and movements in Chuvashia. “The United Russia” is the strongest among them.

The present political situation in Chuvasia can be characterized as stable. This stability is based on the support given to the reforms by the population and on the united activities to achieve economic prosperity.
