Translation of idiomatic/Phraseological and stable expressions.

Units of nationally biased lexicon and ways of their translation.

Each nation in the course of its historical development acquires a great number of features characteristic of the nation only and not pertained to any other. Here belong the following words and word-groups designating national customs, traditions, folk rites, administrative and political systems. Thy may also designate peculiar geographical or environmental conditions of a nation’s life. No less peculiar may also be the cultural or religious traditions of nations often expressed through certain proper names or names of saints: Івана Купала, Маковея, St. Patrick, Uncle Sam.

There are also national meals, partaking of food, established as a result of a nation’s agricultural traditions and consumption of peculiar product; it may also be some national systems of weights and measures: mile, верства, пуд.

Nationally biased lexicon can be translated as follows:

1. By transcription or transliteration:lord - лорд, lady - леді, mister - містер, kozak - козак, hryvnia – гривня.

2. By transcription or transliteration and explication of their genuine nationally specific meaning: They took her to the Tower of London. – Вони показали її стародавню лондонську фортецю Тауер. Downing Street is guarded outside by a single policeman. – Резиденцію прем’єр міністра Великої Британії охороняє один полісмен.

3. By descriptive explaining only. Pilgrim Fathers – Батьки прочани – перші колоністи з Англії, що прибули 1620 року до Північної Америки на вітрильнику «Мейфлауер».

4. By translation of componental parts and additional explication of units of the nationally biased lexicon. Well, I can tell you anything that is in English bluebook, Harry. – Ну, я тобі можу розповісти все, що написано в англійській «Синій книзі». («Синя книга» - збірник документів, що видається з санкції парламенту Великої Британії в синіх палітурках.)

5. By ways of word-for-word or loan translation:first (second) reading – перше (друге) читання (офіційне внесення законопроекту в англійський парламент), secondary grammar school – середня граматична школа, the Order of Yaroslav the Wise – Орден Ярослава Мудрого.

6. Translating by means of semantic analogies. Well done! – Молодець!, come, come - заспокойся, досить, курсова робота - term/yearly/essay project,курси підвищення кваліфікації - training course.

Idiomatic or phraseological expressions are structurally, lexically and semantically fixed phrases or sentences having mostly the meaning, which is not made up by the sum of, meanings of their component parts.

They can be translated:

1. By choosing absolute/complete equivalents: Augean stables – авгієві стайні (занедбане місце), Cassandra warning – застереження каландри (застереження, на які не звертають уваги, але які збуваються), to cross the Rubicon – перейти рубікон (прийняти важливе рішення), to cast pearls before swine – перла перед свиньми, a lost sheep – заблудла вівця.

2. By choosing new equivalents.The devil is not so black as he is painted. – Не такий страшний чорт, як його малюють., А lot of water had run under the bridge. – Багато води спливло відтоді., Love is the mother of love. – Любов породжує любов., Тo much knowledge makes the head bald. – Від великих знань голова лисіє.

3. By choosing genuine idiomatic analogies:He that mischief hatches mischief catches. – Хто іншим лиха бажає, той сам лихо має; to have the ready tongue – за словом в кишеню не лізти; to keep body and soul together – ледве зводити кінці з кінцями; like mistress, like maid –яблуко від яблуні далеко не падає.

4. By choosing approximate analogies:to make a cat’s paw of something – чужими руками жар вигрібати; more power to your elbow – ні пуху, ні пера; to be finger and thumb –не розлий водою ; it is six and half a dozen –не вмер Данило, так болячка задавила

5. By descriptive translating of idiomatic and set expressions:out of the clear blue sky – раптом, зненацька; red blood – хоробрість, відвага; to sell someone short – недооцінювати когось; a wet blanket – нудна людина; to cut off with a shilling – залишити без спадщини.
