• The past simple and the past continuous are sometimes used together. The past continuous is used for the action in progress (the background action) and the past simple for the completed action. Sentences like this often use when, while or as:

Dave and Caroline were arguing when I came in.

He called while I was taking a shower.

As we were leaving the house, I heard the phone ring.

• For completed actions, we normally use the past simple, even if these events happened repeatedly or lasted for a longer time:

Even if my mum was very angry with my brother, she tried (NOT was trying) not to shout at him.

What did you use to drink?

Why did you use to drink so much milk?

• We use used to to talk about states (be, have, believe, like) and actions which happened regularly in the past, but do not happen regularly now:

I used to swim every day. (I don't do it any more, or I don't do it every day)

• We use used to, not the past continuous, to talk about regular past actions:

I used to go (NOT was going) abroad every summer.

• We use the past simple, not used to, to talk about something that happened only once:

I twisted (NOT used to twist) my ankle in July. (it happened only once, not regularly)
